ABOUT US
Ocean Research Centre is nongovernment organization in Moroni, Comoros islands and operates as a center of scientific and technical excellence in the field of advanced geospatial technologies, producing and providing commercially available geospatial information to strengthen the process of decision-making and to improve the quality of life in Moroni city and different countries. In so doing, ORC promotes the following:
- Disaster Mitigation and Response;
- Sustainable Natural Resource Development;
- Environmental Management and Stewardship;
- Communication and Management of Environmental Health Risks;
- Technical Innovation;
- Monitoring and forecasting the emergency situations with introduction of remote sensing and geoformation systems;
- Commercial Project Support and Development.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
FARMING SECTOR
Using remote sensing data, ORC can assist governmental agricultural planners and individual farmers to monitor crop production and can support agribusiness development and policy. Also, governmental authorities can use this satellite imagery to define and register the boundaries of parcels of land.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND STEWARDSHIP
ORC is dedicated to the protection and management of environmental resources, and focus on the ecology of Moroni and its neighbors. With satellite imagery ORC can assist in detecting and mitigating environmental contamination on land or in water.
EMERGENCEY RESPONSE AND PLANNING
One of ORC's main directions is to support local, regional and international government authorities in understanding areas of higher environmental risk. While predicting floods and mudslides is extremely difficult, ORC uses sophisticated computer hardware and software to capture and to integrate a wide range of spatial data derived from satellite and aircraft images, existing maps, ground surveys, weather stations, and human observations to forecast consequences of such events.
NATURAL RESOURCES STEWARDSHIP
Any government needs to be conscious of how it uses and protects its natural resources such as air, water, forests and wildlife, as well as mineral and energy reserves. ORC can use its own acquired imagery, as well as higher resolution images to produce digital topographic, land cover and other data required for the monitoring and sustainable development of such natural resources.
LAND USE AND PLANNING
Whereas the Moroni government must be concerned with the overall privatization process, local and regional administrations are confronted with daily decisions concerning land use and planning. ORC can serve as a resource to city administrations in preparing decision making tools, using GIS technologies, for zoning and planning activities, registration processes, infrastructure network identification (i.e. water pipelines, electricity networks, telephone lines, etc.), preparation of city and regional maps, and city or regional developmental programs.
